Internships in the Mesirov Lab offer the opportunity to work on research at the cutting edge of cancer genomics as well as on large-scale bioinformatics software tools that serve the worldwide genomics research community. If you’re looking to learn how to analyze genomic data to better understand and treat cancer, or to gain experience in developing open source bioinformatics tools, our lab is a great match for your interests.
The Mesirov Lab works on a wide range of cancer types including pediatric brain tumors, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, and more. We use machine learning and statistical approaches to identify the underlying molecular patterns in tumors, predict patient outcomes and resistance to treatment, and to identify candidate targeted therapeutic approaches. As an intern you will have the opportunity to work with trainees in the lab and the labs of our collaborators - both experimental and clinical - to address these challenges.
Our software platforms, including Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA), the Integrative Genomics Viewer (IGV), and GenePattern, have been used by over a million scientists over the past 20 years to address biomedical challenges. Recently we’ve been exploring how to leverage large language models (LLMs) and generative AI tools to make our software easier to use and to help with post analysis interpretation. As an intern, you will be trained in the use of our software and given the opportunity to work with the development and data science teams on new features, analyses, and important updates to help us continually evolve to support the changing needs of genomics research.
If you are a UCSD graduate or undergraduate student interested in internship opportunities, send an email to mesirovlabinternships-g@ucsd.edu telling us about yourself and your goals along with a resume. We look forward to working with you!
